Choosing Room Darkening OR Blackout

Do you need room darkening blinds or blackout blinds? It's a common question. While room darkening window shades are known to remove most light from the space, blackout is often described as complete darkness. Your window covering specialist can help you decide whether room darkening blinds or blackout shades will work best for you, as well as the factors that play into the results. Fabrics greatly influence the light entering the room, as well as the type of window shades you choose. Window frames can also affect the way blackout blinds block light; they can also dictate whether your window coverings are mounted inside or outside.

Reducing Light Gaps

Light gaps are seen between the side of the window shade and the edge of the window frame. Light gaps are commonly ignored, unless you need the room completely dark in the middle of the day. There are a few elements that factor into the size of the gaps, including the fit of the shades or blinds into your window frame, the depth of the window, the type of shade and how it is installed. This sliver of light can cause blackout shades to be more like room darkening shades. If you'd like to create a truly darkened room, look to LightLock, which adds side channels at the window frame that seal out the light from entering. Another option for design and function is custom drapery. By adding side draperies to your windows, those halos of light are easily covered.

Dual Shades for Darkness and Light

It's known as the "best of both worlds," and you'll see why! You can have the light-filtering shades you love, catching the natural light and landscape views. But, when darkness is what you need, the secondary shade, commonly a blackout roller shade, lowers into place, closing off the room to light and delivering the perfect atmosphere for sleep or catching up on your favorite series. This design for room darkening window shades means that the two shades operate independently. They can also both roll up, out of the way, into one headrail when you want.
