Perfect Match: Pairing Shades with Drapery

We love a good collaboration! For us, the love story of pairing shades with drapery is a must. There are endless combinations to find your desired look, but we have three rooms we know will spark some inspiration. Let’s take a look…

Patterns & Texture

In the design world, patterns and textures are never overlooked. Attention to these details are what makes such a large impact. They can express your individuality and personal style with the custom look you desire. Be mindful to not pick too many patterns and different color hues. This can leave a space feeling chaotic and overwhelming.

When choosing to go a more simpler route for the overall look of the draperies, this homeowner achieved a clean and subtle look. The woven fibers let a soft light glow, illuminating the shade to show off vertical lines. The drapes then act as frame for the window and we like to describe this as sophisticated whimsy.

A Nod to Neutral

When it comes to making a space look bigger, there are a number of ways to do so. One of which includes your choice of window treatments. Selecting lighter color will instantly open up the space. Ceilings will look higher with columns of drapery that naturally hang in a vertical position. Another way to enlarge the look of a room is with sheer shades. The coverage is there, but the glare and UV ray damage is drastically reduced. They will allow for light control and privacy.

By having two neutral window treatments at the same window there is a subtle elegance that adds sophistication. If a slight elevation of personality is needed, try a neutral fabric with a texture of patterning that is only available close up. The jacquard fabric is dense with a slight texture. This can only be described as a luxury look. If considering other fabrics, remember that silk and velvet will be perceived as more formal look, while cotton or linen will give off a more casual, laid back vibe.

Flip the Script with Contrasting Styles

We talked about pairing shades with drapery that are cohesive, but what about contrasting fabrics? We say yes and let’s take a look at why. This is popular because it makes draperies stand out in their color and patterns. To really make a statement, opt for bold and wide width fabric. They will look intentionally full at the window. There is something else to think about…

Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades with Custom Drapes

The finished look of pairing shades with drapery: Take a look at this home office. The windows have been finished with a trim-less look. This contemporary style of finishing windows has depth allowing for mounting inside the window. But, with shallow windows, which is common with older windows, those shades have to be mounted on the outside. This can make it more challenging to install when pairing shades with drapery–but that’s why you hire professionals that make it look easy!

Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades with Drapery

If you need to use outside mount shades, and still want the side draperies, it’s a good idea to choose a low profile shade with roller function or low profile stacking. This way, everything functions well together.
